In 1981, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration of the United States standardized the format. From 1954 to 1981, there was no accepted standard for these numbers, so different manufacturers used different formats. VINs were first used in 1954 in the United States. There are vehicle history services in several countries that help potential car owners use VINs to find vehicles that are defective or have been written off.

I wish he had reached out sooner to me for help on confirming information on a few things as I collaborated with Bruce very slightly on this project to help him with info I personally had from doing this research and I know for a fact that he has 3-4 years of heavy research to develop this chart.VIN recorded on a Chinese vehicle licenseĪ vehicle identification number (VIN) (also called a chassis number or frame number) is a unique code, including a serial number, used by the automotive industry to identify individual motor vehicles, towed vehicles, motorcycles, scooters and mopeds, as defined by the International Organization for Standardization in ISO 3779 (content and structure) and ISO 4030 (location and attachment). My frustrations were caused due to discrepancies I discovered on 67 GMC VIN's used at the Pontiac assembly plant as they appear to be the only assembly plant that used the shortened 7 digit VIN on all 67 models and at the same time I discovered that Canadian VIN's differed and I had no way to double check their info. KUDOS TO Bruce for a REALLY GREAT JOB!!! I myself spent 1-2 years working on developing this same chart for the VIN's and then became frustrated and set this aside when the business was expanding. So here they are, 1967 to 1972 GMC and Chevrolet, VIN and MODEL Number Decoders. Dadslonghorn, 1967-72 Chevrolet Model Number Decoder Brian Atckinson, 1967-72 Chevrolet VIN Decoderĩ. Chewychevy67, 1967-72 VIN and model number exampleĦ. You all were very helpful and generous with your pictures and your time.ĥ. I would like to thank all the members that helped by providing pictures for this project. All of the members were most helpful and even went the extra mile to make sure I had the pictures that were needed. They even provided large size picture files for the Photoshop process. Each member was contacted and they gave their permission for me to use their truck for this project. Pictures of trucks that belonged to members were used to make the decoders even more site friendly. Once the decoders were finished I thought it would be cool to use photo backgrounds to give the decoders a little pizazz. I would like to Thank SS Tim for helping with the project, by providing his knowledge, references, time and encouragement.

For instance a wheelbase length is more informative than a axle to cab dimension, so we used wheelbase length on the decoders, even though the code is actually for axle to cab dimension. In doing so we tried to make the decoders as informative as possible. We intentionally tailored the decoders to fit the trucks most commonly found on this website. Tim made a couple of corrections and had several good suggestions. I redid them using MS paint, and then sent them to Tim for review. He encouraged me to revise my decoders into a more presentable format, and post them up on this site. One of the many friends I have made here is SS Tim. All of these were on paper and I used them to help answer VIN questions that came up on the site for the next two years. Then decoders for Chevrolets were made to complete the set. The next step was Model Number decoders for the GMCs. This evolved into decoders for the rest of the 68-72 GMC light duty trucks. After some research I was able to make a 67 GMC VIN decoder, and used it to help 67 GMC owners decode their VIN's. One thing quickly became apparent, there were no good 1967 GMC VIN decoders available.

What interested me the most were the numbers. In 2009 I joined this site and started learning everything possible about our trucks.
